Hippeastrum

Hippeastrum is a genus with about 90 species and 600 plus cultivars and hybrids, it belongs to Amaryllidaceae family which comprises perennial bulbous flowering plants. Hippeastrums are native tropical and sub-tropical regions of Mexico, Caribbean and South America, most species are native to Eastern Brazil and the Andes in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. Hippeastrum means "Knight's-star-lily", name given by William Herbert. Some species of Hippeastrums are threatened according to IUCN.
